Neck chains Most dog tags are assembled with a silver neck chain. The most common size for this dog tag beaded necklace is a 1/8” bead diameter (also known as #3 chain) with a length of 24" to 30”. Most suppliers offer the chain in either precut lengths or on spools. Chain material is available nickel plated brass, stainless steel and brass. Small 4” chains are used when assembling sets of dog tags.
Split rings Another hardware option besides the standard neck chain are split rings. Used for making dog tag keychains. Most common sizes are 1.0" and 0.75"
Rubber silencers For an authentic military look, rubber silencers are often added to either stainless steel or anodized aluminum dog tags. In addition to the traditional black, many new colors are now available.
